“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:19

It is easy to read this verse alone and think only of our understanding of needs, but Paul is saying this in the context of a greater story. In the previous verses of this chapter, Paul was speaking of the reasons we have to rejoice in Christ. Despite every season of life—difficult or easy, prosperous or wanting—God’s people had been provided for. It is after all of this that he says with conviction, “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” 

The God who met Paul both in the valley and on the mountaintop, the God who was His sustaining power, meeting his spiritual and physical needs, is the same God who will meet the needs of all of His people [us]. God knows our every need, even before we can ask Him for it—He is good and gracious to provide for us all that we need so that we can live a life for His glory and pleasure. He does not make any promises that will be broken, and the super-abundance of His generosity covers all-things. 

So many of the things that we need are the imminent necessities of life, confined only to this world. I often wanted God to meet different perceived needs, or wanted different people to show up in my life. But as God opened my eyes to see that He knew what I needed, and that He wanted to provide for my needs; I learned to trust Him more and receive His provision along the way. God’s perspective of our needs has eternity in view, and not only embraces the daily bread we require today, but the eternal blessings that are ours in Him. When Paul says that God will supply all of our needs, he is showing us that this provision is connected to the great riches and glory of our heavenly Father who loves His children with an everlasting love.

Here are 3 takeaways from Philippians 4:19….

1. God is the source of everything we need 

Whatever your needs are, when you trust in Him, he will not fail to meet all your needs. There may be some wants and desires that are not from him, but He will bring your heart’s desires in line with what He is providing. 

2.  There is nothing we need that God cannot supply. 

God’s provision is not based on our goodness, but on His goodness. God is good to us because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. 

3. According to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus

Once again, there is no limit to God’s riches. It is through Jesus, and because of Jesus that we have God as our supplier. All God’s gifts come to us through the glorious Savior, Jesus Christ.
