Step Into the Unknown

Stepping into the unknown can have a different meaning for everyone—it may be moving to a new country, entering a relationship, going off to university, meeting new people or even starting a new job. Everyone goes through stages in their life, sometimes more often than others, where they are unsure of what will happen. Unsure of what the future will hold, unsure of what they are doing or what will come of the situation.

When we are faced with change and fear begins to overwhelm us, it is then that we must reach out for God’s peace—a peace that transcends all understanding [see Philippians 4:7]. Because when we know for sure that our lives are in God’s hands and that He has the ultimate control, we can bravely trust in Him. In Genesis 12:1-2 it reads:

The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.“ I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing

Abram obeyed, walking away from his home for God’s promise of even greater blessings in the future. The call wasn’t an easy one. God called him away from everything he knew without telling him where he would end up. It was the kind of call that caused Abram to rely wholly upon God. Part of stepping into unknown areas of our lives requires submission to God’s calling. When we step over the line from unbelief to belief, we’re stepping into a hope that extends beyond this world. We’re stepping into eternal hope. Abram realised this early on and so he trusted God’s promises even if he didn’t live to see them come to pass entirely.

If you take the first step, not knowing all the details, trusting that God knows what He’s doing, then every step of the way there will be provision, favour, wisdom. And yes, it’s uncomfortable not knowing; but you have to pray and believe each step you not only have God’s blessing, but that you’re growing and getting stronger. Sure stepping out into uncharted territory is scary and nerve-wracking, but if God is for you, who or what can be against you?
